What older game still feels modern today? (Besides graphics)

I’ll start with Thief (1998). I’m watching a playthrough, and it’s wild how many mechanics and gameplay elements seem like they’d fit perfectly into a game today. It’s almost like a modern game wearing an old game disguise.

I’ll add Frontier: Elite 2. It’s incredible how much they fit on just one floppy disk.

Yeah, and a lot of that floppy space was just MIDI music. They even modeled real-world landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge and had landable ports. Funny how even Elite Dangerous doesn’t have those features yet.

That’s the correct answer.

XCOM: Apocalypse had a faction system, the option for real-time or turn-based combat, and the city felt alive. You could even see your new recruits arrive by taxi from the corporations you hired them from. MicroProse really pushed the limits with that game, and it could’ve been even better with a bigger budget.

@Lex
It had awesome mechanics. I remember how fire could spread in real time and bring down parts of buildings during battles. It added a whole new tactical layer. Plus, when you caused damage to the city, you’d see it reflected during raids. I used to send tanks and hover units to soften up targets before a raid.

@Peyton
Imagine if they mixed in the game mechanics from Alien: Isolation—nightmare fuel!

@Lex
Way ahead of its time.

@Lex
Totally agree!

Yeah, but the script, dialogue, and pacing haven’t aged well. It needs more than just a visual upgrade.

Such a strange little market.

Why do you think the script is below today’s standards?

@Sam
I get what you’re saying about pacing and some of the voice acting, but thematically, Deus Ex still has so much to offer. I notice new things every time I replay it. And JC’s voice? Nothing wrong with it—stoic, sure, but that was a deliberate choice.

Red Faction’s destructible environments were amazing.

There was this one game where you used weapons to raise or lower terrain during multiplayer matches, but it’s mostly forgotten now.

I don’t like your tone.
