What older game still feels modern today? (Besides graphics)

Red Faction’s destructible environments were amazing.

I was so bummed that more games didn’t follow suit with destructible environments. There’s a free-to-play game called The Finals that does it. Three teams fight to capture a vault while a building crumbles around you—it’s pure chaos!

@Olen
I want to love that game, but the community can be super toxic, and it kills the vibe for me.

Have you tried this season? They tweaked ranked mode, and it’s way more balanced now. All the try-hards are back in ranked, leaving quick play much more chill.

The railgun in Red Faction was a blast.

Everyone thought destructible environments would be the next big thing, but instead, we got giant, empty open worlds. I miss the smaller, detailed levels we used to get in games like Gothic.

@Dezi
Fracture! I rented it once but quickly forgot about it. It was innovative, but the execution just didn’t hit right. Still, a cool idea.

It wasn’t until Minecraft that destructible environments came back. Now we have games like Teardown, which takes it to the next level. If you’ve got a powerful PC, it’s a blast!

Alpha Protocol… it was ahead of its time, but people just weren’t ready for it.

It’s such a shame the series never got revived.

Yeah, but the controls were rough, and the AI was pretty dumb. Still, the story and mechanics were top-notch.

@Terry
True, but I didn’t find the controls too bad. I loved the branching story paths and relationships. Plus, maxing out the pistol made the game a breeze!

The character models were the only downside. Every custom character looked ridiculous.

The AI in that game was crazy!

Most of it was just clever design, using voice lines and good level structure to make the AI feel smarter than it actually was.

I think I replayed 1 & 2 the most. I’d finish a mission and just reload to mow everyone down again. Why do you think it was ahead of its time? Bullet-time?

It would work as an indie title now, but for a major release, people would definitely complain.

Elite was way ahead of its time in 1984. It had a procedurally generated universe with trading, space combat, and 3D graphics!
