Which character did you initially think was a throwaway or unimportant, but ended up being a key figure in the plot or a major part of the game itself?
Zack from Final Fantasy VII is a character who is barely mentioned throughout the game, making him seem like just a piece of backstory. Most of the dialogues regarding him are optional; for instance, you can completely skip the section where his parents and Aerith reminisce about him if you don’t visit Gongaga or if Aerith isn’t in your party. However, he turns out to be a crucial character in the plot and the key to understanding Cloud’s past.
Garland from the original as well.
Establish the precedent for the Stable Time Loop that continues to appear in Final Fantasy games to this day.
We had a little opportunity to play with him, and that was not appropriate.
Technically, you control him during the Kalm flashback, but you don’t realize it is him while you’re playing as Cloud.
Crisis Core. Had his own game
I have not played that, I have only tried the newer ones.
You can find Crisis Core: Final Fantasy Reunion for most modern systems. While it won’t have the same feel as Rebirth, there’s a lot of story that I really enjoyed.
His rise to importance in the series feels like odd fan fiction. In the original game, he was a very minor character, and it wasn’t until Crisis Core and the remake that he became noteworthy.
I think they are missing the point a bit. It is not that we need more information about that character, the reveal was all we needed. We just have to know that it isn’t Cloud, and that’s really all there is to it.
