I thought I'd get a turn-based JRPG with funny combat skills, but instead, I found a well-written crime drama with memorable characters. (Yakuza: Like a Dragon)

The live-action series hits Amazon on Oct. 25th. I recommend all of the Yakuza series too, starting at 0. Judgment and Lost Judgment are great games too by RGG - but only the LAD games are turn-based.

Man, I need to play Judgment someday, especially considering the Yakuza franchise is one of my favorites.

@Clove
Judgment and Lost Judgment have the best fight mechanics in the series. And the story is fantastic too. You’ll love them!

I hate Infinite Wealth, not because it’s a bad game, but because it’s such a small improvement that I never want to play 7 again even though I really like it.

Unrelated question from a non-native speaker. In your sentence, does “marginal” work similar to “big” or “bigger” or “greater”? I would expect “marginal improvement” to mean “little to no improvement.” But given the context, it seems to mean “such a huge improvement” that the previous entry pales in comparison. Thanks for your response in advance!

@Nico
Woops, I was sleepy and up at like 3 am. Yeah, it’s a vast improvement.

I mean, it is a funny turn-based JRPG after all.

Locker baby breaks my heart.

Unbelievable how Like a Dragon and Infinite Wealth were never nominated for game of the year. Awards are so rigged. The Yakuza series deserves better.

Imagine shooting a guy in the chest and not even 6 months later he’s doing commercials for a major corporation with his real name and everything.

I love the idea of three grown men fist fighting an excavator and winning.

If you’re enjoying this one, you’re going to love Infinite Wealth. Some might say the story isn’t quite as good, but regardless of that, the turn-based battles are so much better.

Kiryu’s part of the story was fantastic. The boss was kind of lame, his back story I mean. I felt they forced the character in there. Everything Kiryu was trying to achieve and the ending he got was really powerful though. The Palekana stuff and boss was super lame to me. Didn’t feel like a villain should, but Ichiban in Hawaii was well done otherwise.

I’m on chapter 9 and that’s exactly how I’m feeling about it!

I didn’t really know what to expect from LaD, but I really enjoyed it. I’ve only played 3 prior Yakuzas, but it’s easily my favorite so far.

I started this game without knowing where I was going. That was a very cool 60-hour experience.

I finished Yakuza 0 last Christmas in a week, but Kiwami 1 took me nine months. I feel the (melo)drama in the series kind of becomes excessive over time.

Just an amazing series all around! I just beat Zero for the first time last night! Can’t wait to beat the others I haven’t yet. This was the one that really got me into the series!

Can you play this without playing any of the others?

Yes, but there are some characters you would recognize from the series if you played the other ones.
