Why is Unreal Tournament 99 still online and newer ones aren’t?

I remember UT3 having mods, though not as many as UT2004. I used to play on some highly customized servers.

The first one didn’t have vehicles, which made a big difference. Vehicle combat changed the feel of the game.

It’s not vehicles themselves—it’s the massive Onslaught maps that needed them. The focus shifted too much.

UT2004 and UT3 had self-hosted servers too, but Epic shut down the announce servers that tracked them. Now, you need third-party tools or direct IPs to connect.

UT99 is still my favorite! Instagib CTF is absolute chaos and so much fun.

Does anyone remember the Infiltration mod? It had real-world weapons like MP5s and sniper rifles. That’s how I first learned about mods and clans.

Yes! The Benelli shotgun with no spread and the grenade launcher were my favorites.
