I just want a great pirate game. I want to sail freely, explore islands, find treasure, and fight other ships. Something with a massive map, maybe the Caribbean, but not so detailed that it feels like a full-on simulator. I don’t need to understand every rope on the ship. Let me choose if I want to be a pirate, merchant, or navy sailor. Why hasn’t anyone made a game like this? Guess it’s time to replay Black Flag… again.
Might be a weird suggestion, but did you know there’s a Yakuza pirate game coming soon? I think it’s out in February.
Have you tried Sid Meier’s Pirates? It’s not modern or anything close to a simulator, but it’s a classic pirate game with a bit of everything.

It’s crazy there hasn’t been a proper modern remake of Sid Meier’s Pirates. It would be an instant hit.

I still love playing Pirates Gold on the Sega Genesis. Absolute classic.
You might be asking for Skull and Bones. The developers hyped it like it was the next big thing.

I still laugh about the CEO hyping it as a ‘AAAA game.’ There’s no way he believed that. He probably knew the PR was bad and tried to salvage it with buzzwords.
@Ellis
Yeah, Ubisoft’s CEO seems so out of touch with what gamers actually want.
NMS on water as a pirate game sounds like the dream.

Exactly! Imagine an Earth map with real weather and shipping lanes. You could decide to pass other ships peacefully or engage them. Just like NMS, no microtransactions—just pure gameplay. Take Black Flag, DayZ, NMS, and a bit of GTAV. Mix them all up, and you’d have something amazing.
Have you ever heard of the Sea Dogs series? It’s old, but it has pirate themes. I think there was a sequel from Black Mark Studios too. There’s also a game called Maritime Calling, but it’s kind of clunky.
@Charlie
Sea Dogs: To Each His Own is the most recent, but it’s really slow to start and full of bugs.

The latest one is called Caribbean Legend. It’s basically a re-skin of To Each His Own. If anyone’s curious, try the free Caribbean Legend: Sandbox. It doesn’t have the story but lets you test the gameplay.
Honestly, the game has so much potential if you can handle the bugs and weird controls. But man, the tutorial alone might turn you away.
You might enjoy Pillars of Eternity 2 - Deadfire. It’s more of a CRPG, but after the first island, it becomes a sailing game with management mechanics.
Sea of Thieves might be what you’re looking for. It’s the closest thing to a modern pirate game we’ve got.

I tried it when it came out but hated the PvP. What’s the single-player experience like?
@Harlow
The single-player mode is slower. You can’t max out factions, and resources are limited. Also, some events are cut. If you just want to explore and mess around, it’s fine. But if you care about progression and endgame, it might not be for you.
@Harlow
If you’re okay with no PvP and have friends to play with, Sea of Thieves has a Safer Seas mode. They added it about a year ago.

AAA pirate games are so last decade. These days, we want AAAA games, haha.

Sea of Thieves is a blast, even with its quirks. Highly recommend.
