Was the AI in F.E.A.R. actually better than most modern games?

Honestly, most of it came down to the level design. The AI had relatively simple rules, but the game was built in a way that made them look smart.

Exactly. The game made sure there was almost always a way for enemies to get behind you. It felt like they were making tactical decisions, but really, the level just gave them a second path and told them to take it.

If you’re looking for a modern game that captures that F.E.A.R. feel, check out Trepang2. It’s basically the same kind of combat but cranked up to 11.

Selaco is another great one, especially if you liked the AI and level design from F.E.A.R.

F.E.A.R. didn’t come out 20 years ago. Checks release date …oh no.

I still think about that ladder scene.

A big reason modern AI seems worse is because players hate actually losing to smart AI. If enemies truly flanked and used cover properly, most people would just get frustrated and quit. So devs intentionally make them dumber.

The AI was great, but you know what really impressed me? The water physics. That game still has better water effects than most modern games.
