No, no, no… he’s got a point

Just a funny moment I came across in Nexomon. Got me thinking, why don’t more games react this way to the player?

I love when NPCs actually react to what you do. It’s even better when they get angry at the protagonist for doing something shady.

What are some other games where NPCs react like this to the hero?

@Haru
In the old Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, the shopkeeper straight-up kills you if you steal something and come back.

How do you steal in that game?

In the original Gameboy version, you could pick up an item and walk around the shopkeeper’s counter to run out the door. If you do this, the next time you come back, he blasts you with lightning and renames your save file to ‘Thief.’

@Keegan
Yep, and once he renames you to ‘Thief,’ it sticks. He’s definitely the strongest character in the game.

Actions have consequences, even in games like this.

@Keegan
They kept that feature in the remake too!

@Keegan
Speedrunners actually use this trick because it’s faster than farming for rupees.

And they even rename your character to ‘Thief’ permanently. Classic.

@Haru
In Rise of the Third Power, NPCs tell you to leave their homes if you walk in uninvited. Some even give up the location of their valuables just to get you to leave faster.

@Haru
Here’s a link that lists more games that do this: Trespassing Hero - TV Tropes

@Haru
A lot of JRPGs have moments like this.

@Haru
In Enter the Gungeon, the shopkeeper will shoot at you if you fire your gun in his shop. He can also curse you if you try to steal.

@Haru
I played an indie RPG once where NPCs would freak out and blow up if you entered their homes and started looting. Not sure if the game ever got released—it was just a demo I tried at a convention.

That whole scene cracked me up. I couldn’t stop laughing.

You guys keep forgetting to mention the game name!

All forgiven, carry on.
