My Day One Xbox One Controller Finally Died After 12 Years… What Should I Replace It With?

After over a decade of use, my trusty Day One Xbox One controller has finally given up. It’s been through countless hours of gaming, and now I’m trying to figure out what to get next.

Should I stick to the standard Xbox controllers or go for the Elite? Are they really worth it? I’ve heard mixed things about durability, and after 12 years with my old one, I want something that lasts.

Would love to hear your thoughts or experiences with controllers!

I’m still rocking a wired Xbox 360 controller. Those things are tanks.

Same here. I don’t even own an Xbox, just use it for PC gaming. Still works like a charm.

Man, if the Duke had a USB port, I’d still be using that beast. Not sure how the Hyperkin Duke stacks up, though.

@Niko
I’ve got the Hyperkin Duke, and it’s surprisingly close to the original. Works great for my Sasquatch hands!

@Niko
The Duke! Brings back memories of Fable, Halo, and Morrowind. Good times.

@Niko
Fun fact: the OG Xbox ports were basically USB in a different shape. You can mod the Duke with a USB-A plug if you’re feeling crafty.

Mine’s starting to wear out after years of use. Just ordered two replacements for $30. Should last me another decade.

Mine lasted 13 years before it finally died. I couldn’t find another, so I got a Series X controller instead.

Have you tried fixing it? Xbox controllers can be pretty easy to repair depending on the issue.

Agreed. I’ve got an Elite 2, and I fix the LB/RB buttons every year with WD-40 contact spray. Works like a charm.

@Remy
What exactly does the WD-40 fix?

It helps clear out gunk that blocks the buttons. It can even work on stick drift sometimes.

Worst case, you can swap out the guts and keep the original shell. That way, you can still keep the nostalgia.

Did you ever clean it? Might’ve helped it last longer.

Imagine the stick drift it must’ve had!

Why did you have to put that image in my head?

You’re not going to find another one that lasts as long. They don’t make them like they used to.

Elite controllers are cool, but they don’t last nearly as long as you’d hope. If you’re attached to your Day One controller, maybe consider fixing it or at least keeping the shell as a keepsake.
