It’s 1995… friends are over… you pop in the black cartridge… it says ‘Killer Instinct’

That iconic black cartridge. The graphics, the soundtrack, the combos. For those who remember, what was your first impression of Killer Instinct?

When Killer Instinct dropped on SNES, everyone already knew about it from the arcades. It was such a hyped release, and considering the hardware, they did a great job with the port.

The gameplay held up really well even if the graphics took a hit.

@Lane
I think the gameplay wasn’t quite as fun as other fighters like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. KI felt more like a spectacle fighter—cool to look at, but it didn’t hook me as much. That’s how 8-year-old me remembers it anyway!

I got this and Donkey Kong Country for Christmas. Easily one of the best days of my childhood. I played KI until my thumbs couldn’t take it anymore!

The fact it came with the Killer Cuts CD? Absolute perfection.

That soundtrack was peak 90s house music. I played it nonstop on my CD player back then.

Time to explain what an ‘arcade’ even was to the younger folks here.

And you’re in Europe because of those colorful buttons, right?

Definitely a European cartridge. Always thought the multicolor buttons were way cooler than the purple ones we got in the US.

Cinder was my go-to! Also liked Orchid… wasn’t her name Jade or something?

Orchid is right. The ninja guy was Jago.

Your friend picks Cinder and just spams combos. You don’t land a single punch and consider throwing the controller.

Once you master the combo breaker, it’s game over for them.

Just seeing this post, I can hear the title screen music in my head.

There’s still a truck stop near me with a Killer Instinct cabinet in good condition. I take a $20 there sometimes just to relive those days. Still my favorite fighter of all time.

And you only have one controller, so someone’s gonna get mad real fast.

Classic experience: one person plays while the others yell advice and wait impatiently for their turn.
