I would much rather see the slow, forced walking scenes as cut scenes

I am not against single-player story games at all. Some of my all-time favorites are God of War, Spider-Man, The Last of Us, and Uncharted.

I enjoy the gameplay, but I find the slow, forced walking scenes with interactive elements, like pressing a button to inspect items or get dialogue, really disrupt the pacing for me.

While these scenes offer good dialogue and advance the story, I would prefer if they were turned into cut scenes with dynamic camera angles. I’d rather have a 5-10 minute cut scene as a “snack break” than a 5-10 minute forced walking segment.

At the very least, NPCs should match your walk/run speed, rather than having some awkward pace in between.

This is a common issue with any game that includes ‘NPC follow quests.’ NPCs rarely match your walking pace, and your running speed is always too fast, with no middle ground. Sometimes, these moments would be better as cutscenes, but I get why many games opt for the ‘interactive cutscene’ approach that the slow walks create, though I still think they should just be proper cutscenes.

Is there not a feature in AC where your character follows a talking NPC at their own speed if you stay near them for a few seconds?

Yeah, but having the option to speed up and not watch NPCs crawl along is just too tempting to resist! NPCs should move as fast as the players, not force the players to slow down to match their pace.

To be sure, I would agree with you if I was in control of my character right now, but the whole idea of the AC trick is that you don’t have to.

It’s meant to give the player a chance to slow down and take in the scenery. These moments are often packed with detail, so you can really appreciate everything around you.

When this occurs, I’m not focusing on the graphics. All of my attention is focused on the NPC so that I may move when it’s suitable.

That’s because, mathematically, if you had the exact same walking speed, you would never be able to catch up if you fell even an inch behind.

That’s why sprinting is still an option, right? If walking speeds were matched, it wouldn’t mean you couldn’t catch up. You could just run until you do, and then their walking speeds would sync with yours. It’s really not that complicated.

since the guy is discussing a slow forced walking scene without actually running, haha.
