Found this treasure back at my parent's house

Just opening the box was its own experience. They don’t make games like this anymore.

Neverwinter was the best!

Absolutely! Spent countless hours online hopping between custom servers with private mods. Nothing else has really matched it for me, except maybe BG3, but even that feels different.

NWN2 though? Total disappointment.

@Blaine
NWN2 wasn’t great, but Mask of the Betrayer was a standout expansion—worth playing if you get the chance.

@Blaine
Why was NWN2 so bad? I never got a chance to play it because my PC couldn’t handle it back then. Is it worth revisiting now?

As someone who played a ton of NWN online, NWN2’s biggest issue was ditching the tile-based maps for custom meshes. Every new server required downloading huge files for their maps, which wasn’t practical back then with slow internet speeds. The game felt clunky, and the UI was a step down for me.

The single-player campaign was decent, though, and fun if you played with a friend.

@Oli
NWN1 had small modules you could download in minutes and play forever. NWN2’s bigger downloads just didn’t feel worth it back then, especially on dial-up!

“Mom! I’m using the phone!” :joy:

@Darcy
Haha, I was already in my 40s back then but living in the middle of nowhere with only dial-up. Satellite internet wasn’t much better, but it was something!

@Oli
Did you ever play AOL’s Neverwinter Nights in the 90s? That was my first MMO experience.

No, I missed that but played a lot of the Gold Box games and Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures.

@Oli
Ah, the Gold Box era was amazing! I loved the Dragonlance series—so much exploration without any hand-holding.

I remember struggling with NWN2’s controls and camera. It just felt unfinished to me. Maybe the expansions improved things, but I never got that far.

And there’s no chance for a remaster since the source code was lost.

@Tate
Why do game studios keep losing source codes? It’s so frustrating!

It’s often due to poor archiving practices. Once a game ships, the code might not be prioritized unless actively managed.

@Tate
Then let’s get a remake!

@Blaine
NWN’s modding community made it shine. Persistent worlds were the best part.

Neverwinter (the MMO) was trash. Neverwinter Nights, though? Absolute classic.

I recently bought the entire set on GOG for under $10. The nostalgia hit hard!
